RESUMO:

Context: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) represents an important public health problem. Frequently these patients present complaints of dizziness and postural instability, which depends on the adequate reception of information from sensory, cognitive, central integrative components (mainly cerebellum) and musculoskeletal components, in a highly integrated manner. The cumulative effect of changes related to age, illness and inadequate environment seem to predispose falls. Objective: To evaluate the risk of falls in the elderly with DM2. Methodology: An observational, cross-sectional study whose sample will be made up of 60-year old or older patients diagnosed with DM2, according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) criteria, of both genders. Will be used to measure the risk of falls, the QuickScreen Clinical Falls Risk Assessment (QuickScreen) easily and quickly applicable, translated, validated and culturally adapted for a sample of Brazilian elderly. The evaluation of mobility and body balance will be performed through the Mini BEST test; the WHODAS will be used to assess the functionality of patients; besides the evaluation of the cognitive and mental health aspects through the Mini Mental and GDS instruments, respectively. All statistical procedures will be performed using SPSS software version 17.0 for Windows. The normal distribution of the data will be verified by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. For inferential analysis, will be verified associations between the risk of falls (yes/no) (dependent variable) and the independent quantitative variables, using the Student-T or Mann-Whitney tests, according to the Normality distribution; and independent variables using the Chi-square test or Fisher's Exact Test. A significance level of 5% (p <0.05) will be adopted. Later, a logistic regression analysis will be performed in blocks, to identify the independent data of the sample independently associated with the variables related to the risk of falls. Preliminary results: A sample composed of 38 elderly people, so far, aged between 60 and 86 years (mean of 69,1 ± 6,7 years) and prevalence for the age group of 65-69 years (34,2%), the most part female (55,3%), married (73,7%), schooling to primary incomplete (28,9%), housing arrangement of 1 to 3 people (78,9%), participation in community activities (55,3%), mixed population (47,4%), do not practice physical activity on a regular basis (60,05%), with good general health perception (44,7%), as well as hearing (55,3%) and poor vision (28,9%), pain reported in lower members (63,2%), mean of 3,97 ± 3,78 in VAS, and did not use a gait aid device (92,1%). They reported between two and six comorbidities and five or more medications used (78,9%). Diabetes diagnosis time was over ten years (65,5%) and oral medication (50%) was the most used type. Regarding the risk of falls, 4-6 risk factors (47,4%) prevailed, with at least 1 factor reported and at most 8 (mean of 4,11 ± 1,82 factors) and a minimum probability of 7% and maximum of 49%.
