SUMMARY:

Studies show that sleep pattern of adolescents changes with the onset of puberty, leading to a delay in sleep times. However, start of morning classes shorten sleep duration on school days, leading to extension of the sleep duration on weekend, promoting irregular sleep hours, social jet lag, in addition to sleep deprivation, which is harmful to the physical and mental health of adolescents. Sex differences in sleep add variability to these changes, which appear to become more pronounced with the arrival of puberty. Women report a greater need for sleep and spend more time in bed, as well as worse qualityof sleep and more sleep problems, while men tend to eveningness. Therefore, sex differences can accentuate harmful sleep patterns, as well as mood and stress disorders in women. This situation can be enhanced depending on the phase and regularity of the menstrual cycle. Thus, this work aims to analyze sex differences in the temporal pattern of sleep and social jet lag, in relation to mood disorders, stress and cognition in adolescents attending the first years of high school. Participated of the study 157 students (F: 98 – 15.88±0.91 years old; M: 59 – 16.20±1.03 years old) from the first years of high school, with classes starting between 7:00 and 7:30, who answered the Health and Sleep questionnaire, the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Pediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale – 21. Of these participants, 64 participated in the second phase of the data collection, which consisted of the use of actimetry in and a sleep diary, performance of cognitive tasks: carrying out the Continuous Performance Task and the Stroop Test, in addition to hormonal dosage of cortisol and progesterone, the latter only to estimate the phase of the menstrual cycle of girls. Preliminary results using only data from questionnaires for comparison between sexes, girls showed a tendency to sleep earlier on weekend (p = 0.09), woke up earlier (p < 0.01) and had less sleep duration during weekdays (p < 0.05), greater variability in wake-up time (p < 0.01), greater sleep debt (p < 0.05), a tendency towards higher levels of social jet lag (p = 0.06), worse quality of sleep (p < 0.01) and higher levels of daytime sleepiness (p < 0.001). Furthermore, they presented higher levels of stress (p < 0.001) and anxiety symptoms (p < 0.01), with no difference in the levels of depressive symptoms. Considering the regularity of the menstrual cycle, for the analysis of sex differences, 3 groups were considered, boys (M) and girls were subdivided into girls with a regular menstrual cycle (FR) and girls with an irregular menstrual cycle (IF) according to self-report. There was a difference between FR and M groups, in which girls woke up earlier on weekdays (p < 0.05) and showed greater variability in wake-up time (p < 0.05). FI had worse quality of sleep than M (p < 0.05). The FR and FI groups had higher levels of daytime sleepiness compared to M (p < 0.01). Furthermore, the FR and FI groups had higher levels of stress than the M group (p < 0.01). In terms of levels of anxiety symptoms, the FR group presented higher levels compared to the FR (p < 0.05) and the M groups. The analysis considering the phase of the menstrual cycle of girls has not yet been carried out.
