SUMMARY:

The academic environment of high school is conducive to stress in students, being stronger when higher demands and expectations of parents occur. The adolescence is marked by physiological changes in the sleep-wake cycle, where older teens show later sleep times than younger ones. In contrast, schools often start classes very early in the morning, leading to daytime sleepiness, difficulty concentrating and worse cognitive processing. . In addition, psychological distress is increasing in several countries and can impact the development of young people. Therefore, this study aims to study the relationship between the perception of academic stress and sleep patterns and mental health outcomes in adolescents of high school in the morning shift in private schools. The sample will have 400 participants of both sexes enrolled in the morning shift in the first, second and third years of private high schools in Juazeiro do Norte/CE. The participants will answer the following questionnaires online: “Health and Sleep”, Academic Stress Perceptions Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Munich Chronotype Questionnaire, Pediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale, and Adolescent Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale. Data will be analysed using Descriptive Analysis, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Generalized Linear Models (GLM). It is expected that greater the perception of academics, poorer will be the sleep habits and quality and higher will be daytime sleepiness, stress, anxiety and depression levels in adolescents.
