SUMMARY:
The increase in ultraviolet (UV) radiation on the Earth's surface has increased the need for products that contain UV filters. One of the most used filters is oxybenzone, which is indiscriminately discarded into the environment. Due to its bioaccumulation and action as an endocrine disruptor, its ecotoxicological effects on physiology have been investigated, but little is known about its effects on behavior or cognition of zebra fish larvae and adults (Danio rerio). The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effects of chronic exposure to oxybenzone on embryonic development, locomotion, anxiety, behavior and cognition of zebrafish larvae and adults, in addition to evaluating its effects on cortisol levels and oxidative stress. To date, behavioral and cognition tests (New tank, sociality, aggressiveness and T-maze test, for learning and memory) have been carried out in adult zebrafish exposed to 10, 100 and 1000 μg L-1 of oxybenzone, for 15 days. The results showed that the exposed animals showed reduced locomotion and decreased anxiety behavior (in the new tank test), less interaction time with the school (in the sociality test), as well as less interactions with the mirror image (in the test of aggressiveness) and decreased exploration of the new arm in the T-maze test. The results found so far suggest that oxybenzone affects perception, increases risk-taking, impairs the adequate aggressive response and impairs the animals' ability to retain information.
