SUMMARY:

Anxiety is an anticipatory response that has adaptive value for the human species. As a primary cognitive feature of anxiety, worry can be conceptualized as a predominantly verbal and recurrent chain of thoughts, whose contents are about future events with some degree of uncertainty. At an atypical level, worries become difficult to control and are related to an expectation of negative consequences, which brings suffering and functional impairment to people. In the Brazilian context, there is a paucity of measures to assess this construct, as well as findings on the relationship between worry and other behavioral, cognitive, and sociodemographic variables. This research aims to develop an inventory to assess worry, perform a psychometric investigation of the developed measure and investigate how worries are related to sociodemographic, behavioral, and cognitive variables in a Brazilian sample. Considering the trajectory so far, the research is divided into four studies: (I) Theoretical study on the psychobiological aspects of worry (in preparation); (II) Empirical study on the development and evidence of the instrument's content validity (submitted to a scientific journal and is under evaluation); (III) Empirical study on the psychometric properties (e.g., construct validity, convergent validity, concurrent validity, internal consistency and test-retest) of the instrument (data are under analysis); (IV) Empirical study on the impact of worry on cognitive failures (data will be analyzed). Overall, this research is expected to provide an auxiliary measure for understanding worry, as well as evidence on the relationship of worry to sociodemographic, behavioral, and cognitive variables.
