SUMMARY:
Among the tools for the study of sociality in non-human primates, the Social Network Analysis (SNA) remains as a set of techniques being developed for some decades. In this kind of methodology, the social interactions observed between individuals in a group of a given animal are used in the construction of graphs (sociograms) able to represent the socioecological relations observed in nature or captivity. However, even though having its potential for the confirmation of hypotheses’ tests in this area validated, this methodological framework is still underused, specially in Brazil. Through the behavioral observation of a free-living group of common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), a small primate native to the Northeastern region of Brazil, we aim to employ a new development of the traditional SNA, the Multiplex Social Network Analysis. In this new setting of the traditional SNA (also named SNA Monoplex), it is possible to create models (sociograms) built around a weighing of several different social behaviors that considers the relative weights of all behaviors collectively (an impossibility in Monoplex networks). To better understand the statistical e socioecological implications of this sociometrical model, we will employ both techniques (Mono and Multiplex) on the behavioral data of the observed group.
