SUMMARY:
Being eussocial animals, ants present societies with a variety of configurations. Such configurations arise from interactions between individuals and occupancy of nest space. These factors are components of several organizational processes of the nest, from the use of space to the division of labor among individuals necessary for the development of the colony. Within the group of ants, poneromorphs are one of the most pertinent models to be studied, due to morphological characteristics such as the absence of “castes” and their flexible behavioral profile, with the potential to change the task performed by an individual throughout one’s lifetime. One of the less studied genera is the Odontomachus, with species that do not even have ethograms available in the literature. With this in mind, this study aims to characterize the social organization and division of labor in Odontomachus haematodus colonies. Ten colonies of Odontomachus haematodus will be collected within the secondary Atlantic Forest area of the FLONA of Nísia Floresta / RN. The colonies will be transferred to the behavioral biology laboratory (LBC-DFS) at UFRN, where they will be kept in artificial nests. Individuals will be marked with individual coloring patterns on their coat. The behavior of the individuals will be observed through the scan technique, recorded and analyzed in order to describe the use of the nest space, the interaction between individuals and the division of tasks in the colony. We propose to carry out an adjacent sociometry methodology, with social network analysis based on behavioral data. In order to understand the dynamics that govern individual interactions, as well as to identify different groups within the colony linked to the performance of certain tasks.
