SUMMARY:

Hair removal is a practice aimed at the total or partial removal of body hair and has been present in our history since ancient times and in different human cultures. Despite being a behavior performed by both sexes, the reduction or removal of body hair, as well as the maintenance of these, is meant differently for women and men, whether within the construction of genders, either in social or sexual contexts. In this sense, evolutionary hypotheses have been launched in order to understand the role of body hair reduction: what makes the 'hairless' ideal an attractiveness norm especially for human females and what, evolutionarily, males’ preference could bring advantages for these, in context of mate choice. The present work intends to investigate in terms of mental mechanisms, how the norm of hair removal for women is ingrained in the genders’ psychology, which will be measured through the implicit association test compared to the explicit test and measures performed by Eye Tracking. This study also aims to explore variables associated with the body hair perception, such as sociosexuality, relationship status and sexual orientation, as well as analyzing inferences about the personality, age, sexual orientation and attractiveness of women with and without hair. The use of implicit assessments can provide more genuine responses from participants, contributing significantly to the investigation of the adaptive value of certain judgments and perceptions. The results can also contribute to the debate about gender construction.
