SUMMARY:

The school is defined as an environment where the teaching-learning process takes place. However, we often find teenagers experiencing sleep deprivation and sleepiness during classes in the morning. This deprivation and drowsiness interfere with memory and basic cognitive processes, such as alertness, which are essential for the learning process. This is due to adolescents undergoing biological changes in the processes that govern the sleep and wake cycle, making them have a natural preference to wake up and sleep later. In contrast, class schedules occur early in the morning, cutting the sleep time of these individuals, not allowing them to have the need for sleep met, resulting in sleep deprivation and sleepiness. The literature has suggested that light, mainly with spectral composition in the blue band, has an effect on our sleep and wake cycle (SWC), which can delay it (make us sleep and wake up later) or advance it (making us sleep and wake up early) depending on the time we receive it. In addition to being able to influence our alertness making us more alert and improving cognitive performance. Thus, the purpose of this research is to modify the classroom lighting during the morning, when the light induces advances in the SWC, in order to assess the effect of exposure to this type of lighting on the SWC, alertness, alert (heart rate variability), mood, visual comfort and daytime sleepiness. For this, the study will be carried out with students of both sexes from high school in the morning shift at a public educational institution. As a research method, we will carry out the measurements under two conditions, a baseline in which students will be exposed to the usual light in the classroom and a second intervention condition where a white light bulb enriched with blue with temperature 6500K will be used. Participants will complete questionnaires on socioeconomic status, daytime sleepiness, chronotype, mood and visual comfort. In addition, sleep parameters will be monitored through the sleep diary and actimetry for 10 days. During this period, the participant will perform a cognitive test to analyze attentional performance and will use equipment during classes to objectively measure sustained alertness, through heart rate variability.
