SUMMARY:

Alcohol is one of the most consumed legal drugs in the world. Its consumption brings great social, economic and health damages. Within this last item, we find a series of diseases, among them, the spectrum of fetal alcohol disorders (EDAF). The EDAF affects individuals whose mothers consumed alcohol in the prenatal period, presenting, in symptomatology, in a severity spectrum, ranging from cognitive / behavioral deficits to a clinical picture of various manifestations, including morphological changes. Currently, it is believed that the harmful effects of alcohol are a consequence of the exacerbated production of molecules called "reactive oxygen species", which deregulate the organism from its normal homeostasis. In this work we want to see if the use of an antioxidant substance, Tempol, will be enough to reduce or even eliminate the harmful effects of alcohol in the body. For this, we will use an animal model already established in the area of psychopharmacology, the zebrafish, both in its larval stage as an adult. In the case of the adult, we will use the memorization and discrimination protocol to see if the tempol will be able to protect the animal's cognition after alcohol consumption. In the larvae, their development will be observed under the effect of alcohol and without alcohol, the two conditions duplicated for analysis with and without tempol, in addition to a group with only oxygen peroxide as a negative control. Still on the larvae, 7 days after fertilization, we will do a tigmotaxis test for anxiety analysis (same groups as before). With this work, we hope to be able to establish the physiological source of the harmful effects of alcohol in the body, as well as use tempol as a medicine source to mitigate its harmful effects.
