Quality and Regularity of the Sleep and Wake Cycle of blind subjects (partial or total blindness)

KEY WORDS:

free running, sleep disorders, light perception

PAGES: 34
BIG AREA: Ciências Humanas
AREA: Psicologia
SUMMARY:

Light is the environmental factor that most influences sleep and wake rhythm regulation. Thus, blind people who have lost their light sensitivity may find it difficult to synchronize with ambient time, and end up in free running, that is, expressing their endogenous time. However, most researches conducted with these individuals took place in places with wide seasonal variation, which may help in the perception of environmental changes. In addition, there is a wide-ranging discussion in the literature about how blind people dream, whether it is through images or just through other senses, as well as whether there is a difference between congenital and late blind people. Therefore, we propose this project in order to study the regularity and quality of sleep and wake rhythm, as well as dreams in a blind population in the city of Natal, which presents little annual seasonal variation. However, it has a wide daily seasonal variation. The study of this population is important because they may suffer from this desynchronization, both with sleep disorders and with participation in fixed-time social activities. As well as contributing to questions about how this population dreams.
