SUMMARY:

Group life involves complex interactions and relationships that result in the establishment of social structures that reflect the level of integration of individuals with the group. Individual differences in behavioral patterns or personality can influence individuals’ social relationships and vocal patterns. Exhibiting great cognitive capacity and complex social behaviors, capuchin monkeys (Sapajus spp.) are the second most common primate genus in IBAMA-CETAS, resulting mostly from illegal trafficking. Primates that undergo social isolation from conspecifics may develop deficits in the display of typical behaviors of the species, including those related to social interactions, which difficults maintainance and survivorship of these individuals in rescue centers. Furthermore, life in captivity prevents individuals from dispersing or fleeing agonistic events, thus the social integration of individuals directly affects the stress and welfare of individuals. Knowing the personality of each individual in the colony may assist in social management, reducing stress and improving the welfare, with vocal communication being a possible indicator of personality and social integration. Thus, the objective of this work is to investigate the relationships between vocal communication, the level of social integration and personality in captive capuchin monkeys.
