RESUMO:

Carbohydrate consumption is associated not only with relief from hunger but also with the attenuation of dysphoric moods such as anxiety. In women, in the so-called premenstrual period, when there is an increase in the steroid hormone progesterone, an increase in anxiety as well as desire for sweet foods is reported. Thus, it has been suggested that increased preference for sweet taste during the premenstrual period may be a strategy or an attempt to better cope with anxiety. However, the mechanisms by which carbohydrate ingestion would cause relief from premenstrual anxiety are not yet fully elucidated and / or proven, or whether such relief actually occurs. From this perspective, although there are studies that show that eating carbohydrate foods has an influence on emotional states, there are no studies investigating whether carbohydrate mouthwash causes the same effect and whether the response caused by eating carbohydrate foods is due to the perception of sweet taste or the composition of the carbohydrate ingested. Because of this scenario, the main objective of this research is to investigate the effect of mouthwash and carbohydrate solution intake on anxiety in premenstrual students. In addition to this main objective (empirical study III), three further studies are being developed: a systematic literature review on “Dietary Interventions in Anxiety”; the empirical study I, which aims to investigate whether there is a difference in food craving behavior in relation to specific food groups and anxiety-trait among undergraduate students using and not using contraceptives; and the empirical study II, which will evaluate if there is a difference in food craving behavior in relation to specific food groups and in the three domains of eating behavior (emotional eating, uncontrolled eating and cognitive restriction) among college students who have and do not have premenstrual syndrome.
