RESUMO:

In adolescents, delayed sleep and wake-up phases are associated with reduced sleep duration, leading to increased daytime sleepiness and poor academic performance, which may be related to reduced attention span. Attention is a cognitive process whose components have circadian variation, and just as the sleep-wake cycle (SWC) can be modulated by light-dark cycles, which are influenced by latitude and longitude. Therefore, this study aims to characterize the relationship between morning light exposure intensity and duration and the SWC, sleep quality, daytime sleepiness and attention span in adolescents studying in the morning shift of schools in the cities of Santa Cruz, Caicó and Natal, RN. From the initially expected sample of 120 participants, data have already been collected from 122 adolescents in the cities of Santa Cruz (SC) and Natal (Nt). Participants are of both sexes, enrolled in the morning shift in freshmen and sophomore years of high school. Participants will answer: Puberty and Phase Preference, “Sleep and Health” questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Pediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scales. In addition, they will answer a Sleep Diary and the Maldonado Sleepiness Scale, for 10 days, as well as use an actiwatch, for the assessment of SWC and light exposure. Attention will be assessed by the Continuous Execution Task (CPT) between 7:30 and 9:30 in class time. In general, adolescents go to bed and get up earlier and spend less time in bed and are sleepier on school days; have poor sleep quality. Nt has higher classroom light exposure and better attentional performance. Still, it is necessary to continue data collection, as well as the analysis of all data collected so far, as those that will be collected so that any assertion can be made.
