RESUMO:

Introduction: Academic performance is a measure of students' abilities, which expresses how they learned during a training process. This measure is dependent on several behavioral factors, including sleep-wake cycle and mood state. Objective: To study the influence of sleep-wake cycle pattern and mood on academic performance among undergraduate medical students at UFRN - Campus Central. Methodology: The research was approved by the UFRN Research Ethics Committee (REC) with “REC substantiated opinion” number: 2,996,461. These are partial results from a cross-sectional study conducted in semesters 2018.2 and 2019.1 Students completed an identification form, morningness-eveningness questionnaire, Munich chronotype questionnaire, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (IQSP), Depression Inventory Beck (IDB) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Academic performance was obtained from the final grade of the Biological Module II and Infectious Diseases subjects for the second and fourth periods, respectively. Partial results: One hundred and twenty-eight (n = 128) students participated in the study, sixty of the second, and sixty-eight fourth period. Most are male (58.6%), and single (94.5%). Regarding physical activity, 60.9% reported practicing physical activity, 60.9% use individual cars as a means of transport to the UFRN and 59.4% of heads of household have completed college. The socio-demographic profile showed that students have a mean age of 22 ± 4 years and a BMI of 23.67 ± 4.17. Regarding the economic and family situation, 81.3% reported family income of three or more minimum wages and 85.9% owning a home. Of the total, 32% reported not changing their sleep routine on the day before an assessment and 44.5% reported staying up late studying and sleeping before the test. We found a predominance of intermediate (50%), evening-type (19.5%), morning-type (18.8%) and bimodal (11.7%). The irregularity of the sleep-wake cycle, measured by the Social Jet Lag (SJL), showed that 37.5% had no JLS, 33.6% had low JLS and 28.9% had high JLS. We found that over 86% of the students had poor sleep quality. Students had an average academic performance of 7.53 ± 1.08. Students who did not change their sleep routine, morning-type and with good sleep quality had better academic performance. Students who stayed up late studying tended to evening-type, had poor sleep, and high scores of depression and anxiety. Additionally, students with poor sleep quality had high scores of depression and anxiety. We highlight that evening-type students had high state anxiety scores. Students in the fourth period had better academic performance compared to students in the second period. And, multiple and multivariate linear regression showed that sleep quality explains the academic performance of undergraduate medical students at UFRN - Campus Central. Partial considerations: Sleep quality affects both academic performance as well as the emotional structure of medical students. In addition, healthy sleep-time allocation habits on the night before an assessment contribute to improved academic performance, as well as the mood of medical students from the early years of UFRN.
