RESUMO:

The circadian phase delay in sleep-wake cycle in adolescence has been potentialized by behavioral and psychosocial factors typical of modern lifestyle, such as exposure to artificial light at night associated to social activities, especially the use of electronic media in late night hours, exacerbating the behavior of sleep late. On the other hand, social activities, such as the beginning of school day in the morning, prevent adolescents from arise later causing sleep deprivation and internal temporal disorder that can lead to serious complications to health and impairment of cognitive processes, such as attention, affecting performance at school, at work or in daily activities. The aim of this study is to compare sleep habits and quality, chronotype, daytime sleepiness and attention components between adolescents of the suburban and urban regions, in function of frequency of media use before bedtime. The data were collected in 212 adolescents, between 12 and 18 years old, of both sexes, enrolled in the 8th and 9th years of Elementary School of morning shift of 2 schools in urban (Natal) and 1 in suburban (Nísia Floresta) zones. The use of media and the sleep parameters were evaluated through the "Protocol of daily use media" and the questionnaires "Health and Sleep", "Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index", "Morningness–Eveningness Scale", "Pediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale", besides Sleep logs and the use of actigraphy for 10 days. Attention was assessed by a Continuous Performance Task. So far, we have analyzed the data referring to the suburban region (n = 111), where the majority of adolescents have electronic devices in room, with cell phone predominance. In relation to access to Internet, 80.6% have at home and 79.3% in the cell phone.  The majority share the bedroom with someone and the other person also use some electronic media device before bed. There were no significant differences in bed and wake-up times; time in bed; nap frequency; levels of sleepiness on awakening and on daytime; sleep quality; chronotype; irregularity in bedtimes, wake-up times and time in bed between week and weekend, between groups according to the frequency of media use before bed. Independent of the group, students went to bed earlier (F(1, 694) = 14.07, p <0.05), woke-up earlier (F(4, 638) = 53.97 , p <0.05), spent less time in bed (F(4, 638) = 53.97, p <0.05), presented a higher level of sleepiness on awakening (F(4, 638) = 53.97 , p <0.05) and the nap frequency was higher (G1: X2 = 17.64, p <0.05, G2: X2 = 17.21, p <0.05) on weekdays when compared to weekend (free days). Most of the adolescents reported waking up with alarm clocks during the week (43.1%). At weekend, most of them woke-up spontaneously (70.8%) (X² = 155.68, p <0.05). Independent of the group, the majority of adolescents had poor sleep quality. In general, they tend to morningness and low levels of daytime sleepiness. The data of the components of the attention of the suburban region and of all the parameters of the urban region are under analysis. Urban adolescents are expected to make higher use of electronic media near bedtime, and therefore to sleep later, to have shorter bedtimes on weekdays, greater daytime sleepiness, poorer sleep quality, and poorer performance in the attention task compared to the suburban area.
