RESUMO:

After first publications of the classic case studies of the HM patient (with ablation of the hippocampus and consequent absence of formation of new memories), numerous other publications have demonstrated a critical role of the hippocampus in the formation and consolidation of new memories and execution of cognitive functions, such as the mapping of space, for example. In turn, the discovery of hippocampal function on the integration of sensory-motor stimuli dates back to the 1960s. However, while many studies have examined the hippocampal electrophysiology in freely locomoting rats, only a few analyzed the hippocampal activity under speed-controlled conditions. Then, it remains to be determined whether the observed changes in hippocampal oscillations during treadmill, open field and running wheel experiments would result purely from the instantaneous locomotion speed or whether they would also be influenced by accelerations during locomotion. In addition, there is no record in the literature of studies investigating the influence of locomotion speed on other bands of hippocampal oscillations, such as the delta band. The present work investigates amplitude and frequency variations of oscillatory rhythms in the CA1 hippocampal area of rats running in a computer-controlled treadmill. To this aim, we trained 5 male Wistar rats in a treadmill locomotion protocol. We then performed surgical procedures for the intracerebral implantation of microdrives of movable tetrodes for the acquisition and recording of the oscillations generated in the pyramidal layer of the CA1 region of the dorsal hippocampus. We analyzed data on the frequency and amplitude variations of the delta and theta band oscillations during constant speed of 20, 30 and 40 cm/s and at increasing speeds 1, 1.5 and 2 cm/s 2 .
