RESUMO:

Bullying has been systematically studied since the 1990s. However, the results are still unsatisfactory in the sense of reducing its occurrence and its consequences. In this last decade, studies in the evolutionary perspective have been developed addressing to improve these results. This thesis aims to investigate possible contributions of Evolutionary Psychology to the understanding and coping of school bullying. Five studies were carried out. The first was a systematic review of the literature on bullying in the evolutionary perspective, in which 18 peer-reviewed studies were identified in the databases: PsycINFO, PUBMED, MEDLINE, Index Psi, SciELO, LILACS and PePSIC. In the second study, the procedures of adaptation of the Bullying Participant Behavior Questionnaire (BPPQ) were performed, as well as the first evidence of validity of its use in a sample of 478 adolescents from the city of Natal-RN. The third study compared individual and environmental characteristics among 653 adolescents, categorized in different roles in bullying. The fourth study evaluated the frequency of cooperation through an adapted simulation of the Prisoner's Dilemma Game among 274 students in different roles in bullying. Finally, the fifth study aimed to develop and apply a cognitive-behavioral intervention to reduce school bullying using an evolutionary understanding of the phenomenon. Participating in this intervention are 30 students from a 6th grade class from a public school in Natal-RN. All studies are in the process of elaboration and discussion of the results, with the exception of the last one, whose intervention is in the implementation phase.
