RESUMO:

Like other species, humans show the prosociality as a way to maintenance of group life and survival. The literature points out that children who belong to collectivist cultures cooperate and help more, as well children from a lower socioeconomic status (SES) and those who were exposed to an ostracism priming (social exclusion). This research took into account the Brazilian scenario and its different social groups. The first point is the racial exclusion, since historically the Country shows a social deficit regarding to black and mixed populations. The second point concerns to the emergence of groups through the struggle of basic rights and a higher social equality, being these groups represented by the rural communities, a branch from Landless Workers’ Movement (Movimento dos Trabalhadores Sem Terra – MST), and the remaining communities of quilombos. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the effect of social exclusion, SES, and group norms in the children’s prosocial behaviors. This research comprehends two theoretical studies and three experimental studies. Findings from the first experimental study shows children who identify themselves as black or mixed share more resources than white children; children who were primed with sharing between peers show an increasing in sharing behavior, regardless racial bias of the priming and children’s racial identification; and finally, both black, mixed, and white children show a greater explicit preference for white character over the black character. These preliminary findings partially corroborate to the hypothesis, reinforcing the influence of prejudice of black and mixed children and favoritism of white children on the prosocial behaviors. We believe that next studies will strength up the importance of group culture, following the hypothesis that children who belong to groups seeking higher social equality will show more prosocial behaviors. No studies were found investigating these questions in these specific groups in the Brazilian context.
