RESUMO:

The humpback whales (Megaptera novaengliae) are marine mammals found in every ocean of the planet that annualy migrate from feeding sites, high latitude, to breeding sites, low latitude. These animals behaviors are being widely studied since their song was described in 1971. The humpback whale's song has a well defined structure and it is as exclusive feature of the males species, this factor suggests that the song is a component of the sexual behavior of these individuals. Previous studies suggests that these animals organize themselves in a complex populational structure, in which the males can share features of their songs with individuals of other populations through transition areas. The mating system of the humpback whale is defined as floating lek and several researchers study the function of the songs in the reproductive behavior. Studies investigate the song as a multi-display message, working in a complex and stereotyped form. It is still unkown if the song has a role in the interaction between males or in the atraction of females, or even in both occasions. However it is acknowledged that information regarding the individual is passed in the parameters of the song. This study aims to search a correlation between the sizes of the individuals and the parameters of the songs, in order to assist on the topic of the functions of the songs. The data analized on this study was colected in the Arquipélago of Abrolhos (BA) between the years of 2004 and 2005, during the breeding season of the humpback whales.
