RESUMO:

One of the most intense anthropogenic noises occurring in the oceans is caused by the use of air guns for seismic exploration. Seismic testing in the oceans has intensified, and with that, the concern about the impacts of these sounds on marine mammals has also increased. The higher energy levels produced by seismic exploration overlap the sound frequencies emitted by Mysticeti (10 Hz -1 kHz), and the noise emissions are predominantly within the Odontoceti's hearing range (10 - 150 kHz). In recent years, many authors have been describing the negative effects of these noises on cetaceans, so it is necessary to conduct more detailed assessments about the overlap that exists between noise and cetacean acoustic activity. Additionally, as more research is being made and more information on the influence not only of the seismic surveys, but other anthropogenic marine activities have on the marine animals, mitigation guides from other countries have been updated, such as the mitigation guide (JNCC) of the United Kingdom, updated in 2010, its first edition was the basis for the development of the Brazilian guide. In this way, it is also necessary that Brazilian researches contribute to the improvement of the mitigation measures in our country. The objective of the present study is to provide data to support decision making and to contribute to the improvement of the mitigation methodology currently used to optimize the detection of marine biota during the acquisition of seismic data; and the specific objectives are: (a) to verify whether there is a difference in the number of acoustic detections recorded by the seismic survey vessel (traditional methodology) compared to the acoustic record of the support vessel (alternative methodology); b) to verify if the number of acoustic detections per day is associated with the number of air guns per day on both platforms; c) to verify that acoustic detections are associated with the presence of active airguns on both platforms. For this, data were collected in regions of the Campos Basin and Espirito Santo Basin from August 16th to September 12th, 2016. Two independent platforms were used to tow acoustic trawl matrices to perform passive acoustic monitoring and record of cetacean species. One of the platforms was the seismic vessel Challenger (traditional methodology), and the other one, was a boat devoid of prospecting instruments, Auge, which remained 3 nautical miles ahead (alternative methodology).
