RESUMO:

Major Depression (MD) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by intense suffering, which can leading to social and occupational impairments. The main characteristics of diagnostic are depressed mood, anedonia, insomnia or fatigue, sadness, psychomotor disturbance, feelings of loss or guilt, difficulty of think, making decisions, among others. In most cases, it occurs in the form of recurrent episodes, normally during 2-week. In severe cases, death by suicide can occur. Currently, the diagnosis of mental disorders is performed through behavioral symptoms. The absence of blood biomarkers remains as a gap in the diagnosis process of psychopathologies. Thus, some research groups have been trying to find biomarkers that complement the clinical routine and assist in the diagnosis and prognosis of MD, as well as in the therapeutic follow-up. In this perspective, this study will investigate the potential of serum BDNF as a diagnostic and therapeutic biomarker for MD in treatment-resistant patients by measurements of its levels before (baseline phase) and 48 hours after the ingestion of a single dose of ayahuasca tea, or placebo. Studies with ayahuasca, a sacramental and psychoactive drink produced from the decoction of Banisteriopsis caapie and Psychotriaviridis, have been showing promising antidepressant results both in the animal model and in patients with MD.
