Behavioral ecology of Mabuya agmosticha (Squamata, Mabuyidae) associated with rupicolous bromeliads (Encholirium spectabile) in caatinga area in northeastern Brazil

In order to a species be successfull, a range of behaviors are performed, each with a purpose, taking into account the maximization of energy gain and lower costs. The habitat in which the species lives guides its behaviors, the majority of which are focused on the way of life in these places. Bromeliads are important habitats for many species. Among these is Mabuya agmosticha, a species of lizard of the Mabuyidae family, with bromeliad habits and endemic to Northeast Brazil. This study will address the behavioral ecology of M. agmosticha in association with the rupicolous bromeliads (Encholirium spectabile), in the Agreste region, municipality of Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The field work is being carried out monthly, with expeditions of four consecutive days, where we observe the behaviors of this species in association with the bromeliads. Regarding the use of microhabitats, M. agmosticha used basically green leaves (52.25%) and dry leaves (47.75%), and there was no significant difference in the use of bromeliads. There was no difference between males and females in the use of bromeliads, or between adults and juveniles. An average of 2.9 ± 1.2 individuals were observed by clump, mostly a male and a female. M. agmosticha showed preference for the initial (36.3%) and final hours of day (33.6%), but it remained active throughout the day. Most individuals (62.8%) remain with their sides facing the angle of incidence of the sun rays in the initial hours of the day, changing as the temperature increases. M. agmosticha’s diet is composed basically of small arthropods, with evidences of the consumption of little plant material, and no vertebrate prey. Termites were the dominant prey of the diet (23.63%), followed by spiders and cockroaches. There were no significant seasonal differences in diet, either by volume or by number of prey eaten. M. agmoscticha shows a dependence on rupicolous bromeliads and the possible loss of these bromeliads will lead to the reduction of populations and consequently the extinction of this species at regional levels, requiring socio-environmental policies aiming the conservation of both groups involved.
