RESUMO:

The pulvinar complex plays a key role in the transmission of information between cortical areas. This nucleus receives inputs from various areas of the main sensory systems, as well as the cortex, and projects into areas of association of the cerebral cortex and is thus considered as an associative nucleus. This structure is not identifiable in rodents or other small mammals. However, in primates the pulvinar complex occupies a large part of the thalamus and is a component of the subcortical visual system, since it receives afferents from the retina and superior colliculus and has reciprocal connections to various areas of the neocortex. Classically this structure presents four subdivisions, inferior, medial, lateral and anterior, based on the neuronal density and distribution of fibers being the first three involved in the visual processing. The commom marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is a New World primate of daytime habit and visual orientation that has been used in biomedical research because of its phylogenetic proximity to humans. Our objective was to perform a cytoarchitectonic characterization of the pulvinar complex in this species, evidencing its subdivisions, as well as to study the neurochemical content, identifying the distribution of neurons, axonal terminals and glial cells in the subdivisions of this complex. For that, we used histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques, as well as intraocular injection of neuronal tracer to show the subdivisions, neuronal distribution and fibers / terminals, as well as the neurochemical content in this complex. Our results demonstrate the presence of subdivisions in the pulvinar complex, presenting immunoreactive neurons specific to neuronal nuclear protein (NeuN), as well as glial cells immunoreactive to the glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). The presence of immunoreactive fibers / terminals to the b subunit of the cholera toxin (CTb) was evidenced in the inferior subdivision of the pulvinar characterizing the presence of direct projection of the retinal to this nucleus. Immunohistochemical analyzes will be performed to characterize the neurochemical content in the pulvinar complex, as well as the functional character of the fibers / terminals identified in the lower subdivision of this complex.
