Learning and memory are phenomena related to the plasticity of the central nervous system in response to environmental events; already the emotions reflect the ability of organisms to assign valences to those events, making the learning of aversive memories more strengthened and with a long persistence. Persistent storage is one of the most striking features of the long-term memories. The persistence of memory is controlled by cellular and molecular processes, such as activation of proteins, as c-fos and EGR-1, after learning of a behavioral task; and it is subject to modulation by external agents, as stress, which has as its product the release of glucocorticoid hormones. These hormones, in addition to altering the metabolism of the organism and exert effect on the cognitive functions, also influence the expression of synaptic proteins and can thus modulate the duration of memories. The aim of our study was to investigate the influence by acute stress, applied after training, on the persistence of aversive memory in rats submitted to avoidance discriminative in elevated plus maze, an apparatus that simultaneously evaluates learning, memory, anxiety and locomotor activity. Our results indicated that the persistence of memory in this task is five days, accompanied by an increase of c-fos and EGR-1 about 18 hours after the training and the stress applied after training animals decreased this persistence for three days, possibly by the action of glucocorticoids released after the stressor.
