SUMMARY:
Nitroxides are free radicals that have received due attention due to their
potential use as a therapeutic agent, due to their antioxidant properties and low toxicity.
In vivo, the most investigated nitroxide is Tempol (4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-
tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxy), which showed effective reduction of tissue injury in
animal models of inflammation. The protective mechanisms are not fully understood,
but have been mainly attributed to the ability of nitroxides to act as multifunctional
catalytic antioxidants in vivo. Furthermore, nitroxides react with various biological
oxidants and reductants while being recycled in the form of oxamonium cation and
hydroxylamine derivatives. For these reasons, due to promising results in other studies
with nitroxides, the objective is the synthesis of nitroxide derivatives to be tested as
antioxidants in vitro and later evaluated as candidates for the treatment of COVID-19
through infected Vero cell cultures.
Nine molecules are synthesized by several described reaction mechanisms,
which will be structurally characterized by infrared and melting point at first and
observed their antioxidant characteristics.
