SUMMARY:

Pain is considered a significant factor for survival, as it constitutes an alert system, which signalizes potential and real damage to the individual. In patients, pain is analyzed and quantified through verbalization, which is not possible in rodents. Thus, what are often referred to as "pain tests" in rodents are nociceptive tests. The search for new effective drugs with anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects with lower cost and toxicity is of great clinical relevance. The plant species Commiphora leptophloeos (Mart.) J.B. Gillett, stands out for being a medicinal plant used in the treatment of inflammation in general. Therefore, this work aims to evaluate the analgesic activity and subchronic toxicity in mice. The evaluation of subchronic toxicity was carried out from behavioral studies (Hippocratic screening, Open Field test and Rotarod), analysis of hematological parameters, macroscopic analysis of organs, evaluation of inflammation markers and oxidative stress (MPO and MDA) and by histological evaluation. The evaluation of the antinociceptive effect in mice of the hydroethanolic extract of the barks of Commiphora leptophloeos is approved by the CEUA, awaiting reproduction of the animals in the Central Animal Facility of the Centro de Biociências at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), Brazil. The subchronic toxicity study showed that the extract of the stem bark of C. leptophoeos orally at doses of 200, 400 and 800 mg/kg did not present significant changes in behavioral, locomotor and hematological parameters. However, on histological analysis, the dose of 800 mg/kg showed signs that indicate nephrotoxicity. The results obtained in this project aim to obtain a scientific basis to justify the use of Commiphora leptophloeos barks in folk medicine and to contribute to the development of a possible herbal medicine for the treatment of pain.
