SUMMARY:

Sisal is the most common hard fiber produced in the world, corresponding to approximately 70% of the commercial production of all fibers of this type. In the chemical composition of the Agave sisalana residue, different carbohydrates, saponins and phenolic compounds can be found. Phenolic compounds are used in the cosmetic industry because of their photoprotective and antioxidant activities. This work aims to develop a multifunctional formulation with photoprotective and anti-aging activities based on the fraction obtained from the industrial residue of A. sisalana. For this purpose, an extraction from liquid plant material was carried out by means of membrane ultrafiltration, to obtain the fraction <3kDa. This sample was characterized chemically by means of qualitative and quantitative phytochemical studies and evaluated yield and antioxidant activity in vitro. In order to optimize the extraction process and the quantification of phenolic compounds, a new extraction by ultrasonication of the liquid and solid plant material was carried out (L / L and S / S fractions), varying the concentrations of the extracting agent (ethanol / water 50%, 80 % and 100%). The fractions with the best yield and concentration of total phenolic compounds (50% ethanol / water L / L and S / L) were characterized and evaluated for antioxidant activity using different methodologies. The photoprotective formulations were prepared by varying the concentrations of the emulsifiers (Acrylic Acid / VP Crosspolymer and Polyglyceryl-2 Stearate (and) Glyceryl Stearate (and) Stearyl Alcohol) and the shear time in order to obtain the best emulsion. The fraction of A. sisalana S / L 1.0% was incorporated into these formulations. Ultrasound extraction improved extraction yield and reduced time compared to the previous method. The studied extracts showed phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity in vitro in the different stages of the oxidative cascade. Eight formulations were subjected to preliminary stability tests and 3 of these remained stable and will therefore proceed to the accelerated stability study.
