RESUMO:

The inflammatory process is a physiological event generated after a tissue injury,
which could be caused by different types of agents, that may be of physical,
chemical or biological origin. The events generated in the process are caused by
the release of inflammatory mediators, aiming to restore homeostasis. Antiinflammatory
drugs such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and
glucocorticoids are used for the treatment of inflammation, however prolonged
therapy leads to the appearance of adverse reactions that can be harmful to the
patient, and the search for therapies more safe and effective is necessary. In this
context medicinal plants, such as the plant species Jatropha gossypiifolia (Jg) and
Ipomoea pes-caprae (Ipc) may be great allies, knowing that in traditional medicine
they are popularly used for a variety of curative purposes. In this study, the
development of gels containing vegetal extract of these species and the evaluation
of the topical anti-inflammatory activity was performed, using the model of ear
edema induced by single application of croton oil and paw edema induced by
carrageenan (acute inflammation), and ear edema induced by multiple
applications of chroton oil (chronic inflammation). The gels presented acceptable
physico-chemical characteristics and were stable during 30 days of observation. In
the skin irritation test the gels showed no clinical signs of toxicity within 14 days of
observation, corroborating the pH range of formulations compatible with that of
human skin and indicating the safety of the product developed for topical use. The
anti-inflammatory activity presented by Jg gels was confirmed by inflammatory
parameters (edema, myeloperoxidase enzyme, nitrite and histopathological
analysis) and oxidative (lipid peroxidation and reduced glutathione) and Ipc gel
showed inhibitory activity in the different models of acute inflammation and
chronic), and biochemical and histological analyzes of the samples are being
performed with the objective of supporting the observed results. This study
presented the anti-inflammatory potential of the gels developed with the extracts of
the species J. gossypiifolia and I. pes-caprae, and could serve as starting point in
the development of a herbal product for the treatment of inflammatory processes.
