SUMMARY:

The present dissertation has as its direct object of investigation the intertwining between the theory of madness and sexual love in Arthur Schopenhauer's metaphysics. This examination takes place, especially, from readings of the second volume of The World as Will and as Representation (1844), especially chapter 32, which deals with Madness, and chapter 44, entitled The Metaphysics of Sexual Love. The proposed intersection between madness and sexual love concerns the clashes that the imperative desires of the Will - represented in the structure of nature by the sexual impulse - have with human rationality, regarding the dissonant interests between nature's determining will (the interest of the species) and the human rationalized will. In this sense, the clash between these two interests gives rise to the possibility of madness as a fission point present in this conflict, since madness, here, will be the activity that aims to solve a possible damage to the individual, as the exercise of the Will to live. This conflict is presented from the perspective that the metaphysical idea of sexual love, in the field of representation, is an artifice used by the Will to deceive man and objectify his untimely will. In synthesis, the proposal of the action of madness in sexual love will be carried out in relation to the possible problems that the effectuation of the sexual impulse may encounter on its way to the finality of falling in love.
