SUMMARY:

Foucault’s interest in psychoanalysis is na old thing, although not always explicit. In 1976, the author released The Will to Knowledge, the first volume of his The History of Sexuality. On this occasion, he presents a series of unpublished hypotheses about sexuality and desire that go against the official history of Freudian psychoanalysis. Significant changes took place in the initial project of this work, but its main thesis, namely, that of the historicity of desire, remained. And it is around the problem of discursive inscription of the notion of desire in the West that the philosopher proposed a game to his contemporaries, but especially to psychoanalysts, for whom such a notion is central. The game consisted of making, each of the participants, their own genealogy of desire and see what would come. But what is the purpose of this “Foucault's Game”? First: the philosopher resorts to the notion of “experience” to designate, in the context of research and writing, a transformative experience of the subject based on thought, an experience from which the same would not emerge. Second: his research on desire led him to a genealogy of ethics through the theoretical framework of important practices and techniques for transforming the subject. Apparently, Foucault himself had not come out the same of this experience. He intended, therefore, more than to convince others to accept his genealogical theses, to encourage them to do the same, because only then would the experience reach its full potential. In the first part of this work, we will present a mapping of the game concept and its articulation with philosophy; also interrogate the reason for why exist being of prescriptive discursive practices from different historical periods and we will explain some approximations of the results of Foucault's research with the practice of the psychoanalyst. All this to a) demonstrate that the game was in fact proposed; b) formulate its rules; and c) consider its implications. We will support this in the History of Sexuality (four volumes), in courses at the Collège de France and in texts from Sayings and Writings.
