SUMMARY:

The present thesis analyses the concept of transfiguration in the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche and in the art of Alex Grey. The chapter 1 presents one approach to the aesthetic, phenomenological, psychological, ethical and metaphysical aspects of the transfiguration in the Nietzsche’s immanentist thought: the subsequent sections highlights the genesis of aesthetic act (1.1); the correspondence between art and life (1.2); the creative and contemplative states (1.3); the theme of overcoming nihilism through art (1.4); the constituent elements of artistic metamorphosis (1.5); and define how the transfiguration happens from the philosopher’s view. The chapter 2 presents one understanding to the metaphysical, ethical, psychological, phenomenological and aesthetic dimensions of the transfiguration in the Grey’s transcendentalist art: the subsequent sections highlights the realization of creative process (2.1); the correlation of perennial philosophy with his artworks (2.2); the experience of artistic metamorphosis and the mission of visionary (2.3); the overcoming of existencial nihilism through the aesthetic phenomenon (2.4); the antagonism between creative action and meaningless of life (2.5); and define how the transfiguration happens from the artist’s perspective. All in all and in short: this thesis highlights the relation of connection between the concept of transfiguration, contemporary philosophy and visionary art.
