RESUMO:

     The Epicurean par’hemâs (our power) signifies the human power to know, deliberate and act freely. The notion of par’hemâs separate fundamentally the Epicurean atomism of Pre-Socratic atomism and is requisite for the Epicurean elaborations. This thesis is an interpretation of Epicurean philosophy, starting of analysis of Epicureans texts and bibliographic research. The aim’s work is show an interpretation of epicureanism starting for the notion of par’hemâs as basic component of Epicurus’ thoughts, presenting your meaning, aspects and function in the Epicurus’ doctrinal set. This thesis is divided into three chapters and start emphasizing the meaning, aspects and relevance of Epicurean par’hemâs. The second chapter considers the par’hemâs primordial function in the reformulation of Pre-Socratic atomism and how this notion articulate the Epicurean philosophy parts. Lastly, the notions of limit, unlimited and variation are highlights for the distinction's assimilation enunciated for Epicurus between chance, necessity and par’hemâs. In conclusion, the Epicurean appreciation about the cognition power, deliberative and causal power integrate the basis of Epicurean criticism of the first atomists and are the starting point and articulating factor of Epicurus’ doctrinal set.
