SUMMARY:

Detecting subsurface beach ridges covered by aeolian modern sediments is challenging through conventional methods such as aerial photogrammetry and satellite images. In this scenario, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is the primary method for identifying and characterizing beach ridges. The integration of facies analysis and radarfacies characterization further enhances the accuracy of beach ridge and the sequence of prograde coasts interpretation. Combining geophysical techniques with traditional sedimentological analysis highlights the complex depositional processes associated with beach ridge formation and establishes a solid foundation for future research. A beach ridge is identified in GPR profiles following two criteria: the sigmoidal external geometry of these bedforms
and their internal radarfacies. The sigmoidal envelope of each beach ridge encompasses strata deposited in the backshore, foreshore, and shoreface settings. The comprehensive depositional model for beach ridges offers insights into their distribution, depositional architecture, sequence stratigraphy, internal structures, and the impact of sea-level fluctuations on beach ridge formation and preservation. Overall, this study significantly advances our understanding of beach ridge formations and their depositional architecture. It contributes to the field of coastal geology and offers practical insights for the understanding of coastal processes, which may be a valuable framework for studying similar landforms worldwide.
