SUMMARY:

The control of a basin structural architecture evolution by preexisting basement structures is still a highly debated issue. The present study aim to: (i) investigate how a preexisting basement shear zone can influence the tectonic evolution of a sedimentary basin and its structural architecture; and (ii) through analog modeling data, compare with the development of basins in eastern continental margin of NE Brazil. Thus, we carried out analog experiments simulating the influence of a basement structure (strike-slip deformation - D1) on basin development (extension deformation - D2). Two sets of experiments were performed: i) single-layer experiment constituted by rheologically homogeneous material (quartz sand), and ii) multi-layer experiment represented by a heterogeneous stratified sequence constituted by materials with different rheology (sand and silicone). The experiments indicate that the preexisting basement fabric effect the structural architecture during the rifting. The sections without basement structural heritage developed normal faults with N-S trend and a deeper asymmetric basin. The section with preexisting basement fabric generated segments of normal faults with NE-SW and NW-SE trend and a shallower and more symmetric basin. Analog models help to understand the relationship between inherited structures and basins evolution. Our results emphasize that an inherited structural architecture plays an important role in fractures and fault arrangement during the basin development. In addition, our experiments are comparable to the influence of a preexisting basement fabric during the evolution of basins in the eastern continental margin of NE Brazil.
