TITLE:

Geophysical Framework of the Brazilian Equatorial Margin

KEY WORDS:

Brazilian Equatorial Margin; COB; Gurupi Graben System; Pará-Maranhão Basin; São Luís Basin

PAGES: 42
BIG AREA: Ciências Exatas e da Terra
AREA: Geociências
SUMMARY:

The Brazilian Equatorial Margin (BEM) comprises a WNW to NW-trending segment, along which a complex set of sedimentary basins were developed during the Neobarremian to the Albian. The evolution of the BEM has been addressed in several theses and publications, most of them concentrated in the region between the Potiguar and Barreirinhas basins. Recent discoveries of hydrocarbon reserves in the continental margin of Ghana, in Africa, and in the Potiguar basin (Pitu well), increased the interest in the study of the Equatorial Atlantic margins. In this context, it is important to better understand the opening mechanism of these basins, whose exploratory potential demands furhter research. This work comprises two research lines, both supported by gravimetric and magnetic data. The first one aims to delimit the passage from the continental crust to a strictly oceanic one (continent-ocean boundary - COB). The second research topic will address basins located further West, in the less known segment in the Brazilian Equatorial Margin: the Pará-Maranhão, São Luís, Bragança-Viseu, Ilha Nova and northern Grajaú. These basins still lack a more robust and detailed characterization of the geometry and kinematics of surface and subsurface structures. The integration of geophysical data will improve the location of the COB and to characterize the crustal thinning along the CBB transition, which alternates between smooth and rough profiles, depending on their location along the continental margin. In the western portion of the MEB, it was possible to characterize the geometry and the main faults associated to the Gurupi Graben System and the Pará-Maranhão basins.
