SUMMARY:

During the South Atlantic opening, in the Early Cretaceous, interior rift basins were developed in the Northeast from Brazil, recording the continental rifting stage, that later evolved to the passive margins in the Eastern Atlantic. The Rio do Peixe Basin (RP) belongs to this set of basins, whose sedimentary fill is related to the rift stage. However, recently, Low Devonian strata were identified underneath the Rift Sequence, making the RP a differentiated example among the rift basins in the region. Using outcrop, wells and 3D seismic data, this work aims to present new interpretations for this Paleozoic remaining, addressing the tectono-stratigraphic aspects of the pre- and syn-rift intervals of the basin. The study area includes the outcrop and subsurface portion of the Pre-rift Sequence, on the western part of the Sousa half-graben (Shg), as well as the subsurface occurrence in the eastern portion of the Santa Helena step (SHs). The basement contact with the sedimentary package, in the directional ramp and in the flexural margin of the Shg, occur by faults. On surface and subsurface, a low-angle unconformity occurs at the base of the Cretaceous Sequence. The rift structures are characterized by NW-SE distension. In a less expression, a second event is related to the opening of the Equatorial Margin, in a transtensional regime. The Devonian Sequence exhibits a deltaic system, divided into a transgressive and regressive systems tract. It is inferred for this sequence a relation with the chronocorrelate interval in the Parnaíba Basin, corresponding to the Pimentairas and Cabeças formations, located further west of the RP region. In the Rift Sequence, the interdigitation between its units was attested. This sequence is subdivided into tectonic systems tracts, which are associated with initial tectonics and moments of high and low tectonic activities.
