RESUMO:

Five 3rd-order depositional sequences are interpreted from the early Albian to late Campanian interval in the Potiguar Basin. An integrated analysis of seismic interpretations, well logs, cores, and biostratigraphic data leads to the definition of system tracts and sequences. As they become younger, the falling stage and lowstand system tracts of the depositional sequences become thinner or are not interpreted, and their transgressive and highstand system tracts become thicker, which reflects the overall transgressive trend of the 2nd-order sequence in which they are inserted. Depositional sequence 1 comprises Albian siliciclastic to carbonate deposits. The falling stage system tract 1 (FSST 1) is preserved in a submarine canyon (C1 canyon). The lowstand system tract 1 (LST 1) is composed of fluvial strata restricted to valleys (LST 1c) or amalgamated over a large area and deltaic deposits (LST 1uc). A carbonate platform in marine sections and its correlated landward fluvial deposits represents the transgressive system tract 1 (TST 1) and highstand system tract 1 (HST 1). Depositional sequence 2 comprises early to middle Cenomanian deposits. Submarine canyon C2 is filled with FSST 2 and LST 2. At onshore sections, the LST 2 is composed of braided fluvial systems. The TST 2 onlaps the maximum regressive surface 2 (MRS 2) at marine sections and is represented by low-energy fluvial systems and marine-influenced floodplains in onshore sections. The highstand system tract 2 (HST 2) downlaps the maximum flooding surface 2 (MFS 2) and has a very restricted onshore occurrence. Depositional sequence 3 deposits are late Cenomanian to late Turonian-aged. TST 3 onlaps the MRS 3 at marine sections and is represented by meandering fluvial, tide-influenced fluvial and estuarine systems onshore. HST 3 downlaps MFS 3 in marine sections and is composed by carbonate deposits and correlated siliciclastic deposits onshore. Depositional sequences 4 and 5 are entirely represented by Turonian to Campanian carbonate deposits of the Jandaíra Formation, where only transgressive and highstand system tracts were interpreted. The Açu Formation, the primary oil-bearing formation of the Potiguar Basin, is inserted into depositional sequences 1, 2 and 3 and is strongly affected by lateral and vertical variations of depositional systems in system tracts. Therefore, the sequence stratigraphy analysis presented in this paper represents a time and spatial relation of depositional sequences in the 3rd-order scale that can be used as a low-resolution framework for high-resolution sequence stratigraphy studies.
