RESUMO:

The present research intends to understand the implantation of the Ponta do Mel carbonate platform, defining its depositional model, its evolution in the light of Modern Stratigraphy, as well as understanding the stratigraphic relations with beneath, overlapping and contemporary units, from a database that involves well data and 2D and 3D seismic data. The focus area of this study corresponds to the Potiguar Basin offshore portion, which is parallel to the coastline, about 40 km from the coast. The Ponta do Mel Formation carbonate rocks were deposited at the end of the Albian and, similar to what occurs in the other basins of the Brazilian continental margin, is related to the events of separation of the African and South American continents. The 1D analysis of the wells allowed us to understand that the sedimentation history of the Ponta do Mel unit started from the deposition of siliciclastic and carbonate lithofacies in a shallow water platform environment. With the subsequent increase of the accommodation space, in a transgressive phase, there was deposition of a thick interval of deeper water lithofacies, represented mainly by calcilutites and pelitic rocks. At the end of this interval, facies of thicker granulation, represented mainly by calcarenites, and sometimes calcirudites, begin to dominate the platform, denoting a regressive phase
