Sedimentation processes in estuaries are complex due to fluvial and marine influences. The dynamics of the distribution and dispersion of estuarine sediments is controlled by regional climatic factors, including sea level changes, or local forces such as oceanographic (waves, tides and currents) and anthropic influence. The main objective of this work is to produce a sedimentological characterization and to identify the main factors that control the sedimentation in the Potengi River-Estuary, in addition, it is intended to compare the past data with the new mapping. As preliminary results, 32 samples of bottom sediments were collected along the Potengi River, and treated by granulometric analysis, CaCO3, organic matter, ioindicators (ostracods), as well as 32 oceanographic profiles. Ten sedimentary facies were classified along the canal. Comparing with other works, it was possible to notice significant changes along a tidal channel east of the Marina - Yacht Club, as well as in an area adjacent to the naval base and in the region between the Marina - Yacht Club and the Port of Natal.
