RESUMO:

Estuarine successions record marine and fluvial hydrodynamic conditions and can be used as indicators of sea level rise. This study aims to understanding the evolution of the sedimentation of the estuary of Potengi River and its relation to the variation in sea level for the refinement of depositional systems models modern estuarine in tropical environments. We use high-resolution seismic profiling to investigate the shallow sediments. About 65 km of seismic lines parallel and perpendicular to the Potengi Estuary channel were collected using a Boomer and a Sparker system. The acquired data were processed by ReflexWin 8.0 software and the best viewing was possible to identify characteristic architectural elements of estuarine deposits. Three seismic horizons were identified, HI, HII and HIII, and three seismic units that fill the valley estuarine, UI, UII and UII. A synthetic depositional model for the estuary was developed, where: HI was interpreted as regional unconformity, possibly Pleistocene/Hologene; HII as transgressive surface of ravinement, marked by small channels; HIII is a conformity surface that separates units with different seismic amplitudes. The UI and U2 units have similar seismic facies of lower seismic amplitudes with downlaps reflectors, erosional surface and inner small channels, being related to filling channels and indicating channelized flow. UIII is a thinner package consisting of plane-parallel reflectors strongly marked and being related to finer sediments of the mangrove lateral advances. These preliminary results show that the depositional phases of Potengi Estuary in the Pleistocene / Holocene were controlled by varying the level of the sea.
