SUMMARY:

Background: Recently, p16 and Ki-67 biomarkers have an important role in the screening of women with positive HPV, assisting in the diagnosis of precancerous and neoplastic processes in the prognosis of cervical cancer. The objective of the present study was to carry out an integrative review, in order to evaluate the performance of biomarkers p16 and Ki-67 as an important role of current interest in cervical cancer in liquid medium cytology as an important screening marker. For this purpose, we summarized current scientific data on the role of p16/Ki-67 biomarkers, the diagnosis or progression to CC, in liquid-based cytology sample. Material and Methods: Comprehensive searches were performed on four databases: Pubmed, Lilacs, Web of Science and Scopus, to find papers published between the periods from 2018 to 2022, based using specific MeSH terms and keywords. Results: The primary search yielded 143 articles. After screening and evaluation of eligibility, 12 studies were incorporated in the review. The results showed that performance of biomarkers p16 and Ki-67 in liquid-based cytology sample in the CC diagnostic. Our study focused on  performance outcomes such as sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic odds ratio. Furthermore, we verify that p16 and Ki-67 in liquid-based cytology sample, can help to identify the women whit SCC and high-grade lesions, being benefited for immediate referral for colposcopy. Conclusions: The study suggested, p16/Ki-67 dual staining can enhance the sensitivity of cytology in LBC, acting with predictors of CC and high grade lesions in women affected by HPV, being considered as a promising alternative compared to traditional screening methods, especially for the advantages to be derived from its low-cost use for large scale testing.
