SUMMARY:

The increase in life expectancy and the particularities of female skin highlighted the concern with skin aging. Exposure to solar radiation and hypoestrogenism are important causal factors. Sociocultural aspects motivate the development of cosmeceutical formulations in order to minimize the unwanted effects of skin wear, highlighting the antioxidant phenolic compounds. Research indicates benefits of phytocosmetics, however there are limitations in the literature. Objective: To carry out a systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials, addressing the efficacy of polyphenolic compounds in delaying skin aging in women. Methodology A bibliographic search was carried out in Pubmed electronic databases, published between 2016 and 2021. This study was designed according to PRISMA-P, and the search strategy used the PICO (population, intervention, comparator and outcomes). Eligible studies were randomized trials and quasi-randomised, double-blind, controlled trials, with the exception of one study that did not include a comparator group. Studies were selected that evaluated the efficacy of a phytocosmetic alone or in combination, which reported at least one of the following outcomes: elasticity, hydration, transepidermal water loss, and microphotographic parameters of the skin. After retrieving the articles in the databases, 08 studies were selected, with a total number of participants varying between 20 and 120 individuals, being healthy women aged between 30 and 65 years. Partial results: A great variety was highlighted in the phytochemical profile of phytocosmetics, however, phenolic compounds were found in almost all of the works. There were no significant differences between groups regarding hydration and transepidermal water loss. The tested phytocosmetics had a negative impact on elasticity. Regarding the microphotographic parameters of the skin, we highlight improvement in smoothness, scaling and quantity of wrinkles. Partial conclusion: Based on the results, we evidenced great variability regarding the products tested, RCTs and high risk of bias. Additionally, the method used in the extraction and incorporation of bioactives into the formulations can compromise the effectiveness in parameters such as elasticity. We highlight potential benefits in terms of wrinkles, desquamation and smoothness of the skin, given this, it is a promising strategy, although more methodologically consolidated tests are necessary. To date, there is no evidence of benefits in the use of polyphenols in the conflict of skin aging.
