SUMMARY:

The immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnancy has not
yet been well characterized, as well as possible impacts on fetal and neonatal
health. In this preliminary study, the peripheral levels of total T lymphocytes,
CD4+ T lymphocytes, CD8+ T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes and natural killer
cells of pregnant and postpartum women with positive and negative PCR for
SARS-CoV-2 were compared in order to identify changes that may
compromise fetal and neonatal health. Peripheral blood samples from pregnant
and postpartum women who underwent PCR for the diagnosis of COVID-19
were analyzed during the months of May 2021 and March 2022, using the flow
cytometry technique using the activated cell fluorescence analyzer (FACScan)
and Cell Quest software. The sample consisted of 50 women, of which 32
(64%) had a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19. Preliminary results showed
that pregnant and postpartum women with COVID-19 had high levels of
cytotoxic T cells (CD3+/8+), contrary to what was observed in NK cells (CD16-
56+) and B lymphocytes (CD19+) that had low counts in the group with less
than 30 days of illness. Additionally, marked total T cell counts were also
observed in the vaccinated women. Low levels of B cells in patients in the
acute phase of infection may reflect a lower transplacental transfer of IgG class
antibodies to the fetus. The continuation of the study can elucidate the
changes caused by COVID-19 during pregnancy in immune system cells and
fetal and neonatal complications.
