SUMMARY:

Intra and interspecific genetic and phenotypic variability are essential aspects considered in genetic improvement. In this sense, mating in fish with evolutionarily distinct genetic bases has contributed to obtaining functional products with remarkable market value. Artificial interspecific hybrids for the ornamental market have improved morphological, physiological or behavioral characteristics of economic interest. Among the most commercialized species worldwide, the species Betta splendens (Osphronemidae) stands out, which, due to its beauty and rusticity, moves a huge production chain. Due to the marked sexual dimorphism and high level of agonistic interactions between males, this species is called fighting fish, suggesting that sexual selection is influenced by its ornaments. Analyzes of pre- and post-zygotic reproductive isolation mechanisms involving the genera Betta, Trichogaster, Trichopodus and Macropodus are necessary for their management in captivity and for the development of hybridization protocols in the family. In the present study, pre- and postzygotic reproductive blocks were investigated through analysis of heterologous courtship interactions in interspecific and intergeneric crosses in the Osphronemidae family and the cytogenetic patterns of the species. And the third chapter brings cytogenomic analyzes of six Osphronemid species of commercial interest, producing information from the organization of chromosomes and the level of chromosomal divergence between species, and their possible participation as a mechanism of postzygotic reproductive isolation, directing practices potentially applicable to interspecific hybridization and market expansion of the family.
