SUMMARY:

With the increasing number of onshore wind farms reaching the end of their useful life in several places around the world, the decision-making process that defines the future of the farm is becoming a challenge for the owners. This thesis aims to develop a decision-making model for extending the lifetime or decommissioning onshore wind farms. The research method contemplates three stages: 1) theoretical research through a systematic literature review, with the PRISMA protocol, from articles in the Scopus, Web of Science and EMBASE bases to identify the factors and variables that influence decision making at the end of the life cycle of onshore wind farms, 2) field research, survey type to identify main actions of managers of wind farms in operation on the subject of life extension or decommissioning, 3) field research, through cases with managers of wind farms to validate the decision model identified in the literature. The conceptual model presents eight possible alternatives inserted in two scenarios: decommissioning and termination of operational activities and life extension. The factors and variables that influence the decision-making process are systematized and grouped into categories: Environmental aspects; economic-financial; national; regional; operational; logistics; the infrastructure; human resources (labor); research, development and innovations (RD&I) and public incentive policies. The main factors identified are the operation and maintenance costs (OPEX), the layout review and wake effect, and technological evolution. The partial results present, in addition to the theoretical model, a global scenario of few academic publications related to the theme and with an unbalanced characteristic, when evaluating the amount of empirical studies (based on experiences) with real decisions taken and based versus the total number of studies and points out gaps of research and studies in the theme addressed as a suggestion of insights for prospective research, such as the impact of decommissioning decisions and extension of the operational life of projects in planning the growth of the electricity matrix.
