KEY WORDS:

SUMMARY:

The installation process of artificial lift systems by Electrical Centrifugal Pumps (ESPs) in directional wells must respect maximum limits of dogleg severity, under penalty of permanent deformations and premature failures of the ESP string. Failures in artificial lift systems, especially those considered premature, result in an increase in the number of interventions and operational costs of production.

On the other hand, the establishment of excessively strict limits can lead to design solutions for artificial lift in which the pumping set is not deep enough, in order to result in a reduction in the potential of well production, which can make the use of ESP unfeasible for economic aspects. Due to the lack of norms and standards that clearly define these limits, in addition to the fact that manufacturers and operators adopt different criteria, which in large part are established based on historical and practical knowledge, it is necessary to apply tools that can take into account the boundary conditions that can gives a realistic and deeper analysis of   the problem during the project of ESP systems.

The use of technical resources that provide a good modeling of the problem and with an appropriate calculation methodology is important for an adequate determination of the stresses and strains that the ESP string is submitted along the trajectory of the well, until it reaches its final settlement point. This can lead to more robust design solutions that allow greater production volumes and an adequate degree of operational reliability of the equipment.

In this study, more than a hundred installations of ESP systems in directional wells were analyzed. The wells were in an onshore field in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, that is located in the Northeast Region of Brazil. In this study, more than a hundred installations of ESP systems carried out in directional wells located in a terrestrial field in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, located in the Northeast Region of Brazil, were analyzed. The installations were made with conventional ESP systems and were carried out in wells with high dogleg severity, which exceed those usually recommended through industry "finger rules".

Therefore, the study seeks to identify maximum dogleg limits, through the determination of stresses and deformations in already installed ESP systems and correlation with the reached lifetimes, in order to provide the recommendation of parameters that allow to optimize production gains without generating an increased risk of equipment failure. The products of this work have scope for onshore and offshore ESP systems and may add value in the decision aspects of project, selection and installation in oil producing wells.
