RESUMO:

Fluid flow is a process closely related to geological faults, which may behave as a conduit as a seal. The hydrological behavior of a fault zone is interesting for the science and industry. What can determine the conditions for a rock to be considered reservoir of water, hydrocarbons and other minerals. The Afonso Bezerra Fault System is the most important lineament with direction to NW in the Potiguar Basin. This fault cuts different units in that basin and it is associated to a instense silicification process. The main proposal of this work is understand how this process acted in the different units affected and the consequence of this event in the permo-porosity system of the basin. In order to understand the processes, some analysis were performed such as petrography, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with electron dspesive scanning (EDS), fluid inclusions, fluorescence and diffractometry of X-ray. Finally, analysis of density and porosimetry of the portions unaffected and affected by the silicification process. The results of the research were obtained from samples from the fault, and showed quartz cementation in sandstone with microcrystalline quartz filling the pores and overgrowth of quartz in detrital grains. In carbonate rocks the substitution by silica is complete. Three types of cement can be distinguished. The thermometry performed in the fluid inclusions obtained the homogenization temperature at 50 ° C. The petrophysics (density and porosimetry) of the samples affected by the silicification shows reduction in this properties. Thus, it is possible to conclude that the silicification process occurs in different manner in sandstone and carbonates but the fault is the way for the fluid flow responsible for the alteration in the porosity and consequently, for the development of a seal in the basin.
