SUMMARY:

Discussions about a more socially oriented scientific communication, that is, with open access, emerged in the context of a crisis in scientific journals, where the idea that only a few people could access the scientific knowledge produced, mostly with public resources, was no longer sustainable. In this context, in 2010, UFRN implemented its Institutional Repository with the goal of making its scientific production available to society as a whole, in accordance with the guidelines of the Open Access and Open Science Movement. The population of this repository, concerning the graduation’s final projects, is currently done through self-archiving, in a process consisting of three well-defined stages: student deposit, advisor validation, and library validation. Therefore, as it is an informational process, it is characterized by the existence of informational flows, information mediation activities, and diverse subjects in each stage. In this sense, based on experiences in the library validation stage, a high number of rejected projects were observed, making the process inefficient and delaying the publication of these projects. Consequently, the need arose to develop the present research, with the general goal of investigating the main difficulties and gaps in the final projects deposit process in RI-UFRN. This is, therefore, a social research, of a qualitative nature, based on a case study, whose results analysis will be conducted using Bardin's Categorical Analysis. Regarding the partial results, it was possible to characterize the process based on institutional documents, and subsequently, when confronted with the results of students and library staff, it will be possible to propose mediating actions to improve the process as a whole.
