SUMMARY:

The phenomenon of mass incarceration in Brazil reveals the faces of a justice system that has intrinsic relations with racism. That is why it is not possible to talk about the Brazilian prison system without racializing the debate and unveiling its most varied and complex dimensions, deeply intertwined with the maintenance of a genocidal project perpetrated against the black and poor population of the country. The health of black women incarcerated in prisons is one of those dimensions that this study aims to understand. To this end, I seek to examine the intersectionalities between gender, race, health, and incarceration, also from a decolonial approach, to investigate how black women experience the criminal justice system and how it impacts their health. Based on a qualitative methodology, involving semi-structured interviews, I analyze in this study how health services are offered in a Regional Prison in the interior of Bahia and how the notions of care are triggered by women in deprivation of liberty, health professionals and prison agents of the Unit. The relevance of this research lies in the importance of reinforcing the urgency of agendas for decarceration, to improve the health and well-being of the black, incarcerated and egressed population of the prison system, and especially of black women, as well as for a radical change of social structures from an anti-racist and penal abolitionist perspective.
